'HOBO BLUES' – hoboin' round the world
The dictionary definition of a 'Hobo' is a wanderer of no fixed address; add 'Blues' and you have an eclectic duo of musicians who are currently keeping the faith with the roots of the blues tradition and playing the most extraordinary mix of musical instruments ever heard in the South of France.
Marine and Antoine Chuecos can count eight instruments between them and, with the mix of the blues and some rumblings of skiffle, they usually play at least six of them at the same time! With Marine playing guitar, tambourine (with her foot) and occasional washboard and Antoine playing guitar, Dobro bottle-neck guitar, harmonica and, with his right foot stomp pedal whilst at the same time playing the high hat cymbal with his left, this talented duo form what can only be described as a 'one man band' of two people!
On stage, Marine is both charismatic and energetic with a powerful smoky voice which is reminiscent of Janis Joplin with occasional shades of Bette Midler. To make matters even better, Antoine is an accomplished blues guitarist and together they create a unique sound which is rarely heard outside of the United States.
Their program is a mix of their own compositions and old blues standards such as 'St James' Infirmary' and Johnny Winter's 'Little Schoolgirl'. However, such is their variety of instruments, that they occasionally throw in a rock'n'roll number just to up the pace.
This amiable and talented duo is totally committed to playing the blues but always in their own inimitable style;thus their music is individualistic and never boring.
As a regular worker on such festivals as the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues festival during the 80s and 90s, I can confidently state that I never heard anything remotely resembling this duo in its uniqueness.
Should you be lucky enough to spot this duo 'hoboin' in your neck of the woods, then do not hesitate to get yourselves into gear for a great concert. You will not be disappointed.
